Dean Karnazes, who is obviously an insanely different class of runner than I am, suggested doing what he called a runabout, where you spend the day running when you feel like it, walking when you feel like it, stopping for a latte. Whatever, so long as you spend "six to eight hours" moving forward. The idea is that it would be more about the experience than the miles, that running itself would be a way to discover places you might not otherwise experience.
It's an interesting idea. I wonder if I could ever do something like that. It sounds appealing, but I suppose there are logistical problems:
- How would you get home? Especially if you don't have a particular goal or location you're shooting for, if you're just supposed to wander. I guess if I lived somewhere with better public transportation, this wouldn't be quite as much of an issue.
- Wouldn't this hurt? I mean, I've been putting a decent amount of miles in, in anticipation of my half marathon, but 6-8 hours of walk/run, even if it was mostly walking would probably leave me feeling pretty rough the next day.
- I know he's Dean Karnazes, but he suggests doing this over the course of a series of days. I mean, damn. That's a buttload of running.
I think I'll file this away, though, as an idea I might just try sometime.
